LEP Certification and Career Preparation Courses

A licensed educational psychologist (LEP) is a highly educated professional with many skills and expertise. These individuals possess specialized training in both psychology and education, and they use their knowledge to assess and diagnose learning and behavioral problems in children and adolescents. From there, LEPs work to design and implement targeted interventions to help students overcome these challenges and achieve academic success. Whether in schools, clinics, or private practices, these professionals apply their skills to benefit individuals, families, and school staff.

To become an LEP in California, individuals must meet several requirements, including:

• Hold a master's or doctoral degree in educational psychology, psychology, or a related field
• Complete an approved LEP program that includes coursework in assessment, intervention, and consultation
• Complete a minimum of 600 hours of supervised professional experience, which includes at least 120 hours of direct service with clients
• Pass the California LEP exam
• Complete a criminal background check

Becoming a licensed educational psychologist (LEP) in California requires dedication, hard work, and a commitment to education. Depending on an individual's unique education and work experience, obtaining licensure can take at least three years. This includes fulfilling all necessary coursework, gaining supervised experience, and passing the LEP exam. While some students may be able to complete this journey relatively quickly, others may require up to five or six years to meet all the requirements for licensure. Regardless of the individual path, obtaining LEP licensure is a significant achievement in educational psychology.
