Why Become a Licensed Educational Psychologist (LEP) in California?

A Licensed Educational Psychologist (LEP) is a mental health professional licensed by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences (BBS). LEPs are experts in assessing, diagnosing, and treating learning and behavioral challenges that affect students’ academic performance. This role offers unique opportunities for school psychologists looking to expand their scope of practice and take on more independent roles.

Becoming an LEP allows you to:

  • Work Independently: Unlike school psychologists, LEPs can open their own private practice and offer services directly to clients without being limited to a school district.
  • Expand Your Scope: LEPs can offer a broader range of services, such as private psychoeducational assessments, individualized interventions, and consultations with educational institutions and families.
  • Increase Earning Potential: LEPs often have higher income opportunities compared to school psychologists, thanks to the ability to run private practices and offer consulting services.
  • Make a Greater Impact: With the freedom to work across various settings—schools, clinics, or independently—LEPs can help students, families, and educational institutions more effectively by addressing specialized needs like learning disabilities, ADHD, and autism.

For school psychologists aiming to expand their horizons, becoming an LEP is a powerful career advancement step that offers flexibility, increased responsibility, and the ability to make a broader impact in education.
