Why Become a Licensed Educational Psychologist (LEP) in California?
A Licensed Educational Psychologist (LEP) is a mental health professional licensed by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences (BBS). LEPs are experts in assessing, diagnosing, and treating learning and behavioral challenges that affect students’ academic performance. This role offers unique opportunities for school psychologists looking to expand their scope of practice and take on more independent roles.
Becoming an LEP allows you to:
- Work Independently: Unlike school psychologists, LEPs can open their own private practice and offer services directly to clients without being limited to a school district.
- Expand Your Scope: LEPs can offer a broader range of services, such as private psychoeducational assessments, individualized interventions, and consultations with educational institutions and families.
- Increase Earning Potential: LEPs often have higher income opportunities compared to school psychologists, thanks to the ability to run private practices and offer consulting services.
- Make a Greater Impact: With the freedom to work across various settings—schools, clinics, or independently—LEPs can help students, families, and educational institutions more effectively by addressing specialized needs like learning disabilities, ADHD, and autism.
For school psychologists aiming to expand their horizons, becoming an LEP is a powerful career advancement step that offers flexibility, increased responsibility, and the ability to make a broader impact in education.
How to Become an LEP in California
Becoming a Licensed Educational Psychologist in California requires dedication and perseverance.
Here are the five key steps to becoming an LEP:
How to Maintain Your LEP License
To maintain your LEP license, you will need to satisfy renewal requirements every two years:
- Complete 36 hours of continuing education (CE).
- Law and Ethics: At least 6 hours of your CE must be in Law and Ethics.
- Approved Providers: CE courses must be taken from BBS-approved providers.
- You can claim credit for teaching or taking a course
1 semester Unit = 15 CE hours, 1 Quarter Unit = 10 CE hours
- Sitting on the Ethics Board of CASP satisfies the 6 CE hours of Law and Ethics
To renew your LEP license, you must submit the renewal application before the expiration date along with the renewal fee and proof of completed CE hours. You must also adhere to all legal and ethical standards to maintain good standing.

Preparing for the LEP Exam: What to Expect
-
1. Exam Domains and Focus Areas
The exam’s content spans four essential areas, as detailed in the LEP Candidate Handbook. These areas include:
- Assessment 43%: Emphasizing your ability to conduct thorough psychoeducational assessments, analyze learning disabilities, and interpret test results to make informed recommendations.
- Intervention 23%: Testing your knowledge of intervention techniques for students dealing with academic, emotional, and behavioral challenges. You’ll need to understand how to design effective treatment plans.
- Consultation 14%: This domain focuses on how to consult with educators, parents, and schools to provide comprehensive educational support.
- Law and Ethics 20%: The ethical and legal responsibilities you’ll encounter as an LEP are critical. Questions here will assess your knowledge of California laws governing educational psychology practice, confidentiality, and ethical standards.
You can see what is covered, in detail, HERE.
